Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that Cabinet has approved a decision for Ghana to join BRICS, the powerful economic bloc of emerging economies.
Speaking on Ghana’s evolving foreign policy direction, the Minister said Ghana can no longer rely on old alliances and must pursue partnerships that deliver real, tangible benefits.

According to him, Cabinet has considered Ghana’s potential membership of BRICS and is taking a very positive view of the grouping.
“Cabinet had recently considered the country’s potential membership of BRICS and was taking a positive view of the grouping.”

Ablakwa stressed that Ghana’s new diplomatic approach will be guided strictly by national interest, not colonial history or traditional loyalties.
“This business of these are my traditional allies, these were colonial masters, these are the people who have been with us; it doesn’t work. We are looking at those who are willing to create win-win partnerships. Negotiate fairly, no exploitation, no arm-twisting, no conditionalities.”
He added that with the limited time governments have to deliver on promises, Ghana must move beyond nostalgia and focus on partnerships that can produce results.
What is BRICS?
BRICS originally started as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — five major emerging economies that came together to challenge Western dominance of global finance.
It has now expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, Indonesia and others, becoming BRICS+.
