20-year-old small-scale miner Sentenced 24 months for stealing GH¢4,300
A 20-year-old small-scale miner has been sentenced to 24 months of hard labor by the Tarkwa Circuit Court after being found guilty of stealing GH¢4,300 from a bar at the Tarkwa Railway Station.
Issah Rahman admitted to the crime and has a prior conviction for causing harm, which the court took into account during sentencing. The ruling was also influenced by the prevalence of theft in the Tarkwa Railway community.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Lartey, representing the prosecution, explained that the complainant, Augustus Handson Nuertey, a businessman residing in Akyempim, owned a drinking bar at the Tarkwa Railway Station. On February 24, 2026, at approximately 4:00 a.m., the complainant and his salesgirl, Jennifer Anyimedu, were resting after a long night of serving customers when Rahman entered the bar under the guise of buying a drink.

Once inside, Rahman noticed that both the complainant and his salesgirl were asleep. He took the opportunity to open the drawer and make off with GH¢4,300, which was the revenue from the previous night’s sales.
Upon waking and discovering the theft, the complainant reviewed the footage from the Closed-Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) he had set up in the bar. The video clearly showed Rahman in the act of stealing the money, and the complainant was able to identify him from the footage.
Later that same day, around 10:30 a.m., the complainant encountered Rahman at the Akoon community mine, arrested him, and handed him over to the police for further investigation.
