Mahama Dissolves National Cathedral Board of Trustees

Mahama Dissolves National Cathedral Board of Trustees

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees for the National Cathedral of Ghana Project, effectively ending their oversight of the initiative. This decision is detailed in a letter, dated September 18, 2026, signed by Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs.

The letter, directed to the Chairman and members of the Board, states, “His Excellency the President has directed the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project with immediate effect.”

In the wake of this dissolution, the trustees are instructed to collaborate with the project consultant and ensure the official handover of the National Cathedral project site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026. The Ministry emphasized that this handover is critical “to allow Government to determine the future of the project.”

The communication was directed to the Board led by Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, with copies sent to several key officials, including the Secretary to the President, the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House, and the Executive Director of the National Cathedral of Ghana Secretariat.

On behalf of President Mahama, Mr. Ayariga expressed gratitude to the trustees for their dedication, stating, “I wish to thank you for your commitment to promoting the Christian faith in the country.”

Following the formal handover, the government will evaluate the next steps for the National Cathedral project.

Following a scathing audit report, President John Dramani Mahama, on July 18 2025, ordered the dissolution of the National Cathedral Secretariat and initiated legal processes to disband its Board of Trustees. The directives were announced by Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who stated that the Secretariat was dissolved as of May 1, 2025.

The action follows a Deloitte and Touche audit of the National Cathedral Secretariat’s operations for 2021-2023, which uncovered a litany of financial irregularities, procurement breaches, and a “general lack of due process.”The Minister said the findings “rock the very foundation of the project and the work of the Secretariat and raise serious questions about the use of public funds.”

Beyond the immediate dissolutions, the government is taking further steps to address the pervasive issues. The full Deloitte and Touche audit report will be published to ensure transparency, the Minister stated.

The Auditor-General has been requested to commission a comprehensive forensic audit into the operations

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice has been tasked with taking legal steps to lawfully terminate the contract for the National Cathedral project, a measure aimed at “preventing further costs and losses to the state.”

The Minister affirmed that “decisive action will be taken regarding any impropriety determined and the future of the project itself” once the forensic audit is complete. This signals a potential re-evaluation or complete halt of the controversial project.
