Government Cannot Dissolve GFA – Sports Minister Kofi Adams Clarifies
Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stated that the government does not have the power to dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA), despite growing calls for drastic action following the Black Stars’ poor performances.
His comments come after Ghana’s embarrassing back-to-back defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, which have left the team bottom of their group and sparked nationwide outrage.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, the Minister addressed demands from some fans and stakeholders who have called on government to dissolve the FA and start afresh.
“I don’t think government has the power [to dissolve the GFA],” Kofi Adams stated.
He explained that the GFA is a legally registered association under the laws of Ghana and an autonomous member of FIFA, and any attempt by government to directly dissolve it would attract sanctions from world football governing body FIFA, which frowns upon government interference in football administration.

Ghana has previously had a taste of this when FIFA threatened to ban the country in 2018 following attempts to dissolve the GFA after the Anas Number 12 exposé. That led to the establishment of a Normalization Committee to manage Ghana football before elections were held in 2019 that brought Kurt Okraku to power.
However, the Minister was quick to add that government will not hesitate to act if any GFA officials are proven to have committed a crime.
Adams added that action could be taken if GFA officials are proven to have committed a crime.
His comments come at a time when Parliament’s Sports Committee Chairman, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has announced plans to invite the GFA and the Sports Ministry to explain the Black Stars’ recent struggles.
With the Black Stars now facing an uphill task to qualify for the 2027 AFCON after failing to qualify for the 2025 edition, pressure continues to mount on the FA leadership.
The Sports Minister assured Ghanaians that government remains committed to supporting reforms and accountability within Ghana football, but within the confines of the law.
