Akufo-Addo Breaks Silence After NPP Elects John Boadu: “All Hands On Deck For Bawumia Victory in 2028”
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following its just-ended 2026 National Annual Delegates Conference in Kumasi, which saw the election of a new set of national executives to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

In a statement posted on his official social media pages on Monday, the former President described the conference as a powerful display of the NPP’s internal democracy.
“I congratulate warmly the outgone National Executives Committee, led by the former Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, the members of the National Officers Elections Committee, chaired by the Hon. Frederick Opare Ansah, and all delegates for the successful organization and conduct of the NPP’s just ended 2026 National Annual Delegates Conference in Kumasi. The Conference has, once again, demonstrated the vibrancy of the New Patriotic Party’s internal democratic processes.”

Over 7,100 delegates converged at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on October 3-4, 2026, to elect new leaders under the supervision of the Electoral Commission.
In the main highlight, former General Secretary John Boadu staged a massive comeback, polling 2,888 votes (47.19%) to beat former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko who had 2,408 votes, former Chairman Paul Afoko with 790 votes, and Sammy Crabbe.
His victory was boosted by a last-minute alliance after Crabbe stepped down and declared support for him on the voting grounds.

Incumbent General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua retained his position with a massive 4,486 votes.
Akufo-Addo warmly congratulated the new team led by Chairman John Boadu and immediately turned his attention to 2028.
“I congratulate equally warmly the newly elected national executive officers of the Party, led by the dedicated Party worker, the new Chairman John Boadu, and extend my best wishes for a fruitful mandate.”

He called for unity after what was a fiercely contested internal election:
“The conclusion of the Conference must mark the beginning of the progressive march of the Party’s collective aspirations as ‘One Party, with One Purpose, United for Victory.’ The time has come for all hands on deck so that the Party can emerge victorious from the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections”
In a significant line, Akufo-Addo explicitly backed the party’s flagbearer Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, saying the goal is to enable:
“a new NPP government under the leadership of the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, to be formed to promote the rule of law and the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian.”
He ended with his signature prayer: “May God bless the New Patriotic Party and may God bless our homeland Ghana and make her great and strong.”
This conference also approved a major constitutional amendment making Flagbearer Dr. Bawumia the official Party Leader, taking over from the National Chairman.

For the NPP, which lost the 2024 general elections, the Kumasi conference is seen as the start of a rebuilding process. With old hands like John Boadu, Justin Kodua, Nana Akomea, Hawa Koomson and Titus Glover back in the driving seat, the party is banking on experience to reclaim power in 2028.
The message from Akufo-Addo is clear: elections are over, now unite behind Bawumia.
