Hawa Koomson Becomes NPP’s New National Women’s Organiser With 783 Votes
Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been elected as the new National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Hawa Koomson secured a decisive victory at the party’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, polling 783 votes to beat her contender Hajia Safia Mohammed who got 429 votes.

The contest was part of the NPP’s national executive elections supervised by the Electoral Commission across 31 voting centres, with 1,275 delegates eligible to vote in the Women’s Organiser race out of the total 7,163 delegates present.

Her election marks a major comeback for the former legislator who entered Parliament in 2012 and retained the Awutu Senya East seat in 2016 and 2020. She served in the Akufo-Addo administration as Minister for Special Development Initiatives and later as Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in 2021, before losing her seat to the NDC’s Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor in the 2024 general elections.
This new role returns her to a prominent national role, leading the party’s women’s wing ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking after her victory, Hawa Koomson stood by her campaign promise to provide pepper spray to NPP women for self-defence, a proposal that sparked debate during the campaign.
“I’m not retracting it. I’m not sure it’s a crime to give someone a pepper spray to defend himself. I’m a living testimony. When I was beaten at Ablekuma North, it was the pepper spray that saved my life,” she said.
She also pledged to bring her rival on board, saying she will work with Hajia Safia Mohammed to advance the interests of women in the party.
Other winners on the day include Justin Frimpong Kodua who was re-elected General Secretary with 4,486 votes, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover as National Organiser with 2,964 votes, and Abanga Fuseini Yakubu as National Youth Organiser with 1,550 votes.
