One Artiste Cannot Carry Ghana — Black Sherif

One Artiste Cannot Carry Ghana — Black Sherif

On The Afternoon Show with Anita Akuffo, Black Sherif said what many in the industry have been thinking but were too careful to say out loud.

“It is not realistic for one person to carry an entire nation to the global stage as people assume. It can never be the work of an individual artiste. It has to be a collective motion,” he said.

Black Sherif was clear on the show: there is only so much one person can do.

And he’s right. Look at how every music export powerhouse actually did it.

Ghana keeps waiting for a messiah when we need a movement.

Blacko also touched on something deeper; our obsession with comparing ourselves.

“With how we want to experience our music and the kind of countries we are comparing our music with, it is not realistic,” Black Sherif claimed.

We want the streaming numbers of countries with 200 million people. We want the label infrastructure of countries that have invested for 20 years. We want the global playlisting without the local systems that feed it.

The interview wasn’t just about the industry. Black Sherif described his current era as a reintroduction.

“The music I was making in 2019 and in high school, the music I was making during the pandemic, they sound like Sun Sherif. So this is a reintroduction of me and how many layers there are to me,” Sherif explained.

That’s telling. Even for an artiste who has touched the global stage; Billboard, Boiler Room, global collabs; he still understands that personal growth is collective. He is evolving because his sound, his team, his experiences are evolving.

His new project, SUN SHERIF, is that evolution. Not the hungry boy from Konongo anymore. Not just the pain of Second Sermon. A more layered artiste who knows he can’t, and shouldn’t, carry Ghana alone.
