Shatta Wale Writes Open Letter To President Mahama Over Social Media Abuse
Dancehall star Shatta Wale has written an open letter to the President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, calling for a balanced framework to tackle defamation, harassment and abuse on social media.
In the letter dated 28th September 2026, from the Office of Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., Shatta Wale referenced the President’s recent remarks at a Town Hall Meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York, where he expressed concern about misinformation and insults on TikTok and other platforms.

Shatta Wale, who described himself as a victim of years of unverified allegations and public ridicule, said the culture of abuse did not begin with social media but has now been amplified by platforms that allow anyone with a phone to broadcast instantly.

1. A clearly defined legal framework for serious online misconduct with due process.
2. Protection for legitimate criticism, journalism, satire and political expression.
3. Engagement with platforms to strengthen account verification using Ghana Card SIM registration.
4. Proportionate penalties, including short custodial sentences not exceeding one month.
5. No reintroduction of criminal libel in another form.
6. Public education on responsible online conduct.
7. Early consultation of the creative industry.
