Wontumi’s GH¢30m Exim Bank Case

Wontumi’s GH¢30m Exim Bank Case Adjourned to October 13

The case involving former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Wontumi, and the GH¢30 million Ghana Export-Import Bank (Exim Bank) matter has been postponed due to amendments made to the charge sheet.

On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the Accra High Court decided to reschedule the hearing to October 13, 2026, after the prosecution updated the charge of uttering a forged document to clarify the specific company linked to the alleged forgery.

As widely reported, the prosecution presented the revised charge sheet to Wontumi’s legal representatives at the start of the proceedings. They requested the court to replace the previous charge sheet, filed on May 15, 2026, with the newly amended one.

The prosecution stated, “We wish to withdraw the charge sheet filed on May 15, 2026, and substitute it with the charge sheet filed on September 22, 2026We wish to withdraw the charge sheet filed on May 15, 2026, and substitute it with the charge sheet filed on September 22, 2026.”

Due to this development, the accused have yet to enter their pleas and will be expected to do so when the court reconvenes on the new date.

The amended charge sheet, dated September 19, 2026, continues to accuse Wontumi of forging a document under Section 169 of the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29). The updated information specifies that the document in question is a pro-forma invoice from EPSONS GHANA LIMITED.

The allegations suggest that Wontumi utilized this invoice in 2017 within the Greater Accra Region, fully aware it was counterfeit. He reportedly used it to mislead Exim Bank officials and acquired GH¢4 million from the institution.

In relation to the Exim Bank case, Chairman Wontumi, who is currently serving a prison sentence tied to the Samreboi illegal mining controversy, faces trial alongside Thomas Antwi-Boasiako and Wontumi Farms Limited. They are charged with several offenses, including defrauding by false pretenses, uttering a forged document, money laundering, and deliberately causing financial loss to a public entity.
